WHAT IS BYCATCH?

Bycatch, in the fishing industry, is a fish or other marine species that is caught unintentionally while fishing for specific species or sizes of wildlife. Bycatch is either the wrong species, the wrong sex, or is undersized or juveniles of the target species.

WHAT US THIS TECHNOLOGY, AND HOW IS IT USED?

Preliminary studies have found that if you attach colored LED lights in artisanal gillnets it can help to decrease bycatch by 93% for sea turtles, 71% for marine mammals, 95% for elasmobranchs (sharks and rays), and 84% for seabirds.
The goal of this pilot project is to reduce the unintended catch of bycatch in the Ecuadorian Artisanal gillnets by attaching, documenting and collecting data to prove the efficacy of lights meant to deflect non target species to avoid the fishing gear.
